AI in the Classroom: Revolutionising Education with Cutting-Edge Technology

Revolutionising UK Education: AI in Schools and the £2 Million Investment in Oak National Academy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping the landscape of education in the UK. From personalised learning experiences to administrative efficiency, AI is making its mark in schools across the country. One notable investment, a whopping £2 million government injection into the Oak National Academy, aims to further improve and expand AI tools for teachers.  Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “AI has extraordinary potential to reform our education system for the better, with considerable value for both teachers and students. Oak National Academy’s work to harness AI to free up the workload for teachers is a perfect example of the revolutionary benefits this technology can bring. This investment will play a defining role in giving our children and the next generation of students a better education and a brighter future.”

In this blog, we’ll explore the impact of AI in UK schools, highlight the investment in Oak National Academy, and provide examples of AI applications transforming the educational experience across the globe.

Artificial Intelligence has become a game changer in schools, offering a myriad of benefits that are revolutionising the way education is delivered and received. Here are some key areas where AI is making a significant impact:

1. Personalised Learning

AI-powered platforms like Century Tech analyse students’ strengths and weaknesses, tailoring learning content to individual needs. This personalization ensures that students receive the right support to excel in their studies.

2. Homework and Assignment Support

Applications such as ScribeSense use AI to provide instant feedback on homework and assignments. This not only helps students understand their mistakes but also empowers them to improve their work.

3. Student Engagement

Classroomscreen is an AI-driven tool that enhances student engagement by offering a variety of interactive features like timers, noise level monitoring, and drawing tools, keeping students actively involved in the learning process.

4. Administrative Efficiency

AI helps streamline administrative tasks for teachers and school staff. Tools like SIMS manage student data, attendance, and performance, reducing administrative burdens and enabling educators to focus on teaching.

5. Early Intervention

AI algorithms, as used by TeacherTapp, allow teachers to identify at-risk students early and implement timely interventions to support their progress.

The Oak National Academy: A Visionary Investment in AI

The Oak National Academy, a key player in the UK’s educational landscape, has received a remarkable £2 million investment to improve and expand its AI tools for teachers. This forward-thinking initiative is set to transform the way educators deliver content, assess student progress, and support their professional development.  There will be new resources in England that will support teachers in planning lessons and building classroom quizzes, as well as reducing their workloads. These resources will be powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Oak National Academy is an online platform that provides free video lessons, quizzes, and resources for teachers, students, and parents. It was established during the COVID-19 pandemic to support remote learning and has since grown to offer a wide range of educational content for students of all ages. Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, has said:

“Throughout my career, I have seen the positive impact that technology can have, which is why it is great we’re harnessing the potential of AI and supporting Oak National Academy to develop new resources for teachers. Whether it’s drafting lesson plans or producing high-quality teaching resources, I am confident that by tapping into the benefits of AI we will be able to reduce teachers’ workloads so that they can focus on what they do best – teaching and supporting their pupils.”

Teachers have already provided positive feedback from the initial testing, noting the tools’ ability to help them speed up planning and refine existing materials.

One Year 4 teacher from Berkshire, who used the Quiz Designer stated: “Oak’s AI tool has massively improved the quality and variety of quizzes I can create. And it’s much faster than making them myself from scratch.”  A secondary school teacher in Devon added: “Oak’s AI lesson planner offers a really helpful starting point if stuck or low on inspiration and I was particularly impressed at how good it is at highlighting common misconceptions.”

30,000 teachers already use Oak every week, and the resources will help them save time.

The project will also provide edtech companies experimenting with AI access to Oak’s curriculum resources, built on its commitment to making resources openly available under the Open Government License. As a result, schools, publishers, or AI developers can be confident that the content produced through these tools is accurate, safe, and high-quality.

Oak National Academy Co-Founder and Chief Executive, Matt Hood OBE, highlights that:

‘Teachers spend hours each week searching for resources and planning their lessons. Oak National Academy is already helping cut workload with our free, high-quality teaching resources, but we believe we can supercharge this by harnessing safe AI – giving teachers even more scope to adapt their resources and freeing them up to spend more time directly with their pupils.’

This substantial investment in the Oak National Academy’s AI capabilities signifies a significant commitment to enhancing the quality of education in the UK. Here’s how this investment is set to bring about positive change:

1. Improved Lesson Customisation

With the infusion of AI, the Oak National Academy will be able to offer even more personalised and tailored lessons. This means that teachers can access resources that are specifically suited to the needs of their students.

2. Enhanced Assessment Tools

AI-powered assessment tools will enable teachers to gain deeper insights into student performance and adapt their teaching strategies accordingly. These tools will not only save time but also provide a more holistic view of each student’s progress.

3. Professional Development Support

AI can assist in identifying areas where teachers may benefit from professional development. The Oak National Academy’s investment in AI will provide educators with valuable insights into their teaching methods and suggest areas for improvement.

4. Expanding Accessibility

The investment will help expand the Oak National Academy’s reach, ensuring that more schools and students across the UK can benefit from its resources and AI-driven tools.
