5 Engaging and Educational DIY Science Experiments for Kids

    Description: Teach kids about solar energy by helping them construct a simple solar oven using a cardboard box and aluminium foil. Once constructed, they can use it to cook small snacks like s’mores, observing how the sun’s rays generate heat.

    Materials needed: Clear plastic bottle, vegetable oil, water, food colouring, effervescent tablet (like Alka-Seltzer)

    Description: Create a mesmerising lava lamp with just a few household items. Fill the bottle with water and oil, add a few drops of food colouring, then drop in the effervescent tablet. Watch as bubbles form and move through the liquid, mimicking the lava lamp effect.

      Materials needed: Clear plastic cups, paper towels, water, seeds (beans, peas, etc.)

      Description: Explore the process of seed germination by conducting a simple experiment. Wet a paper towel and place it in a cup, then add a few seeds and observe daily as they sprout roots and shoots. You can use this fun activity to discuss the role of water, sunlight, and soil in plant growth. 

      Materials needed: White school glue, liquid starch, food colouring (optional)

      Description: Mix equal parts white school glue and liquid starch to create a gooey slime mixture. Add food colouring for a pop of colour.  With the assistance of a parent or tutor, you could then explore the science behind slime.  Depending on the age of the child, this could include things like polymer chains and non-Newtonian fluids.
